What to expect from your herbal balm massage in Bangkok

Your therapist arrives at your hotel room or condo with a warming herbal balm, and the massage takes place on your own bed, so there is nothing to set up. After a short chat about where you feel tension, you lie down covered by the bed sheet and the balm is worked into the muscles with firm, soothing strokes.

The warmth of the balm sinks into the muscles and helps them relax, so firm pressure feels comfortable and relieving rather than harsh. The session concentrates on the back, shoulders and legs, and many guests book it after long flights, physical activity or long days of sitting. It suits anyone who enjoys warmth and firm, therapeutic pressure.

For the deepest muscle work, deep tissue massage is our strongest option; for acupressure and stretching in loose clothing, choose traditional Thai massage; for a lighter session, aromatherapy massage is a gentle alternative. We cover hotels along the Chao Phraya in Riverside and Pratunam as well as Sukhumvit and Silom, and the balm makes a comforting late-night massage before bed.

The Thai herbal tradition

What is Thai herbal massage?

Herbs have been part of Thai massage for generations, and herbal balm brings that tradition into your room.

How does herbal balm fit into Thai tradition?

In Thailand, herbal massage covers both warming herbal balms and steamed herbal compresses, known as luk pra kob. Our treatment centres on the balm, worked in by hand, combining the warmth of the herbs with firm, soothing massage.

What is in a Thai herbal balm?

Thai balms are traditionally made from warming herbs and plant extracts, and plai, a relative of ginger, is a common example. Herbal balms usually carry a noticeable herbal scent, so if you are sensitive to strong smells or have any allergies, tell us when you book.

How does the balm feel?

It creates a gentle, pleasant warmth rather than real heat, building slowly as it is massaged in. That warmth helps the muscles relax, so your therapist can work firmly without the pressure feeling harsh.

What should I do afterwards?

Drink water and keep warm and relaxed for the evening. Many guests leave the balm on for a few hours to enjoy the warmth, then shower. Wash your hands before touching your eyes, as herbal balm can sting.

FAQs

Questions about Herbal Balm

Still have a question?

Message us on the app you already use. We are open every day from 12pm to 3am.

Is herbal balm massage painful?

No. Herbal balm massage is firm and therapeutic but should never be painful. The warmth of the balm helps the muscles relax, so the pressure feels comfortable and relieving rather than harsh. Your therapist checks in throughout, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any time.

Does the balm feel hot on the skin?

The balm creates a gentle, pleasant warmth rather than any real heat. The feeling builds slowly as the balm is massaged in and fades gradually afterwards. If you would like a milder sensation, or have sensitive skin, tell your therapist and they can use less balm on those areas.

Can I request focus on specific areas?

Yes, always. Before the session your therapist asks where you feel tension, and many guests ask for extra time on the shoulders, lower back or legs. A 90 or 120 minute session leaves time for thorough work on two or three areas.

How is herbal balm massage different from deep tissue massage?

Both are firm and therapeutic. Herbal balm massage adds the gentle warmth of a traditional Thai herbal balm, which many guests find comforting on stiff areas, while deep tissue uses slower, more sustained pressure and is our strongest option. Herbal balm starts at THB 1,200 for 60 minutes, deep tissue at THB 1,000.

How much does a herbal balm massage cost in Bangkok?

Herbal balm massage costs THB 1,200 for 60 minutes, THB 1,500 for 90 and THB 1,700 for 120. There is no travel charge within 7 km of Sukhumvit Soi 22, the price is confirmed before your therapist sets off, and you can pay by cash, Thai QR, bank transfer or card.
