Quick answer

Choose Thai massage if you want firm pressure and assisted stretching while fully clothed, with no oil. Choose oil massage if you want long, flowing strokes with warm oil, covered by the bed sheet, to wind down and sleep well. At Soul Treats Bangkok, Thai starts at THB 800 and Oil Relaxation at THB 900 for 60 minutes, both delivered to your hotel or condo.

  • Thai massage: clothed, no oil, firm palm pressure and assisted stretches.
  • Oil massage: warm oil and long strokes, covered by the bed sheet throughout.
  • First time in Thailand? Try traditional Thai for 90 minutes.
  • Thai from THB 800, Oil Relaxation from THB 900 for 60 minutes.

What is the difference between Thai massage and oil massage?

Thai massage is an active, clothed treatment of pressure and stretching with no oil; oil massage is a passive, soothing treatment of long strokes with warm oil, while you stay covered by the bed sheet. Both are excellent, both have devoted followings, and both can come to your hotel room or apartment in Bangkok, but they are fundamentally different experiences.

It is one of the most common questions we hear at Soul Treats Bangkok, from first-time visitors and seasoned travellers alike, and understanding the difference helps you choose what your body actually needs.

Traditional Thai massage, known in Thailand as nuat phaen boran, is an active, dynamic practice that draws on ancient principles of energy and movement. The therapist works along the body's sen lines (energy pathways) with rhythmic compression and guided stretching, using hands, thumbs, elbows and sometimes feet to apply pressure and ease the body into positions that release deep-seated tension. It is sometimes described as "assisted yoga", and the comparison is apt.

Oil massage, most commonly offered in aromatherapy or Swedish-influenced styles, is an entirely different proposition. The focus is on the nervous system as much as the muscles. Warm oil is applied to the skin, and the therapist uses long, flowing strokes designed to calm, soothe and restore. Many guests describe it as the moment their body finally lets go.

How do Thai massage and oil massage compare side by side?

Here is how the two compare on the points guests ask about most:

When should you choose traditional Thai massage?

Choose Thai massage when your body is carrying physical tension that needs structural attention. Guests often book it for:

  • Stiffness after a long-haul flight into Suvarnabhumi
  • Tension built up from hours at a desk or in meetings
  • Tight hips or a stiff lower back after a lot of sitting
  • A general sense of being physically "locked up"
  • Tired legs after a day walking around the Grand Palace, Wat Pho or Chatuchak Weekend Market

The passive stretching works into connective tissue and joints in a way that other styles do not reach. Many guests describe feeling taller after a session, with the shoulders lower and the hips more open. It is also the natural choice if you enjoy a more active, engaged session: you are not simply lying still, but being moved through your range and guided towards openness. When should you choose oil massage?

Choose oil massage when what you need most is not structural relief but deep rest. It is a good fit for:

  • A stressful week or plain mental fatigue
  • Evenings when you feel wound up and struggle to switch off before sleep
  • Anyone looking for a genuinely luxurious, comforting experience
  • A calm reset after a difficult or draining period

The combination of therapeutic touch, warm oil and carefully chosen scents gives you something Thai massage does not: a profound quieting of the nervous system. With aromatherapy massage you can choose the scent, from lavender for calm to eucalyptus for clarity or citrus for an uplift. Business travellers running on adrenaline often find that an oil relaxation massage is the one thing that genuinely winds them down at the end of a demanding trip.

There are variations within the oil family, too. Coconut oil massage uses light, nourishing coconut oil, which many guests enjoy after a day in the sun, from THB 1,100 for 60 minutes. If you like firm pressure but prefer to lie still rather than be stretched, deep tissue massage, from THB 1,000, sits between the two styles.

How long should your session be, and can you combine both?

For either style, book at least 90 minutes for your first session. That gives the therapist time to work through the whole body properly rather than simply covering the surface.

If you are torn between the two, ask when booking about a 90 minute session that includes elements of both, typically starting with oil work to relax the nervous system and moving into more targeted Thai techniques for the second half. We confirm what is possible, and the price, before your therapist sets off. A few practical points differ between the styles:

  • Clothing: for Thai massage, wear loose clothing you can stretch in. For oil massage, you stay covered by the bed sheet throughout, apart from the area being worked on.
  • Showering: a quick shower before an oil massage is a courtesy and helps the oil glide.
  • Eating: eat lightly before either treatment, ideally about 90 minutes before.
  • Pressure: ask for softer or firmer pressure at any time, in either style.

What about herbal balm massage?

Herbal balm massage is a third option worth knowing about. It uses a warm traditional Thai herbal balm, made with herbs of the kind found in Thai herbal remedies such as lemongrass and plai, worked into the muscles by hand so that soothing warmth and massage work together.

Many guests choose it for tired, hard-working muscles, after exercise, or when they carry long-standing tension, and the warmth is especially comforting in an air-conditioned room. Herbal balm massage is THB 1,200 for 60 minutes, THB 1,500 for 90 and THB 1,700 for 120.

Which one should you book?

If it is your first time in Bangkok and your first Thai massage, we suggest traditional Thai for 90 minutes. It is, after all, the massage this country is famous for, and experiencing it in the comfort of your own room from a professionally trained therapist is one of those genuinely memorable parts of a trip. If you are a returning guest or already know what you need, trust your instincts: both are exceptional in the right hands.

Still undecided? Choose by how you want to feel afterwards. Book Thai if you want to feel looser and more mobile tomorrow, and oil if you want to sleep deeply tonight.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thai massage or oil massage better for relaxation?

For pure relaxation, oil massage is usually the better choice: long, slow strokes with warm oil help many guests switch off, and some fall asleep. Thai massage is relaxing too, but it is more active, with stretching and firmer pressure, and tends to leave you feeling looser rather than sleepy. Aromatherapy adds calming scents if rest is your main goal.

Do you take your clothes off for a Thai massage?

No. Traditional Thai massage uses no oil, so you keep on loose, comfortable clothing such as soft trousers and a T-shirt throughout. For an oil massage you undress to your comfort level, and your therapist keeps you covered by the bed sheet throughout, uncovering only the area being massaged.

Which is more painful, Thai massage or oil massage?

Neither should be painful. Thai massage generally uses firmer pressure and stretches, so you may feel a deep, productive ache in tight areas, while oil relaxation massage is gentle to medium. In both styles you can ask for softer or firmer pressure at any time, and sharp pain is always a signal to tell your therapist.

Is Thai massage cheaper than oil massage?

Slightly. At Soul Treats Bangkok, traditional Thai massage is THB 800 for 60 minutes, THB 1,000 for 90 and THB 1,300 for 120, while Oil Relaxation is THB 900, THB 1,100 and THB 1,400. Aromatherapy and coconut oil massage start at THB 1,100. The price is confirmed before your therapist sets off.

Can I have Thai massage and oil massage in the same session?

Ask when you book. A 90 minute session can often include elements of both, usually beginning with oil work to help you relax before moving into Thai pressure and stretches for the second half. We confirm what is possible and the full price on WhatsApp before your therapist sets off.
